Minnesota History

Founded originally as Fort Saint Anthony in 1819, Fort Snelling was eventually named after Colonel Josiah Snelling, commander of the 5th Infantry Regiment during the fort's infancy.

Fort Snelling was used as an important post for the Upper Mid-West all the way through World War II. Fort Snelling was used for numerous military exercises and training for over 120 years. Decomissioned in 1946 (and again in 1994), Fort Snelling now serves as a historical journey from the Civil War to World War II. The Minnesota Historical Society, understanding the importance of preserving an important Minnesota landmark, currently operates the historic site.
